Diagnosed with prostate cancer over a year ago, Ralph Irizarry, one of the greatest percussionists who played with Ruben Blades for fourteen years, made it a mission to get healthy and keep the music going.  Now in recovery, Ralph is on a new mission to create awareness for the importance of getting tested for prostate cancer and his upcoming fundraiser at BB Kings will help to raise both awareness and funds to cover costs of his medical bills and expenses.

Born in New York’s Spanish Harlem, Ralph Irizarry’s family first moved to Brooklyn and then briefly to Queens, before finally relocating in Puerto Rico in 1970. There, he spent three years immersed in music and gained the knowledge and experience that eventually granted him the opportunity to join Ponce’s La Terrífica, as well as sitting in with such prestigious aggregations as El Gran Combo and Sonora Ponceña.
